Halloween planning always sneaks up on me.
One week it’s the middle of September and I’m telling myself we have plenty of time, and the next thing I know it’s October and my kid is asking what we’re dressing up as this year.
Sound familiar?
If you’re a family of three, like mine, you already know the struggle. Group costumes for four or five people are everywhere online. But three?
That takes a little more digging. So I sat down and pulled together every idea I could think of, tried, or seen work well for families our size.
Some are quick DIY projects you can pull off with stuff already in your closet.
Others are easier to just buy online and be done with it. I mixed both kinds in here so you have options no matter how much time or energy you’ve got this year.

1. Dorothy, Scarecrow, and Toto
This one works so well because it’s instantly recognizable and pretty comfortable to wear all night.
Mom or dad can go blue gingham dress and ruby shoes, the other parent stuffs a flannel shirt with straw or hay-colored fabric scraps, and your little one gets to be the family dog in a soft brown onesie with floppy ears.
2. Woody, Jessie, and Buzz Lightyear
Toy Story costumes hold up every single year because they’re bright, fun, and easy to find in stores if DIY isn’t your thing.
Plaid shirt and cowboy hat for one parent, red vest and cowgirl hat for the other, and your kid gets the fun job of being the space ranger in green and white armor.
3. Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, and Baby Jack-Jack
Superhero costumes never really go out of style, and this one lets your family have some fun with exaggerated muscles or a stretchy pose for photos.
Red and black suits for the parents, and your baby or toddler gets to wear the cutest little polka dot onesie as Jack-Jack.
4. Peter Pan, Wendy, and Tinker Bell
This trio gives you a nice mix of colors, green for Peter, blue nightgown for Wendy, and sparkly gold or green for a tiny Tinker Bell.
It works great if your kid is small enough to pull off a fairy costume with little wings.
5. Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach
Gamer families love this one. Red overalls and cap for one parent, green for the other, and your kid gets a puffy pink dress and a little gold crown. Store bought works great here since the costumes are so widely available every October.
6. The Ghostbusters Trio
Matching jumpsuits with a homemade proton pack (a cardboard box and some spray paint go a long way) make this an easy group costume that still feels put together.
Great option if your family likes a bit of a spooky, adventurous theme without going full horror.
7. Gomez, Morticia, and Wednesday Addams
If your family leans a little dark and dramatic, this is the one. Black suit for dad, long black gown for mom, and your kid gets to skip the smiling for pictures all night as Wednesday. Honestly, kids love having an excuse not to smile.
8. Gru, Lucy, and a Minion
This costume idea is a crowd pleaser because kids especially love dressing up as a Minion.
Dad wears a black turtleneck and long coat, mom wears a red wig and matching outfit, and your little one gets overalls and yellow face paint or a yellow onesie.
9. Mirabel, Abuela Alma, and Antonio
For families who love a colorful, story-driven costume, this one brings in bright embroidered clothing and a warm, family focused feel.
Mom or grandma figure gets a shawl and cane, dad or another family member gets a vest with animal patterns, and your kid wears a bright yellow dress or patterned shirt.
10. Elsa, Anna, and Olaf
Still one of the most requested costumes by kids every single year. Icy blue gown for one parent, warm-toned dress for the other, and your child gets to be the goofy snowman in a round white costume with stick arms.
11. Harry, Hermione, and Ron
Wizarding robes, house scarves, and a couple of fake wands are really all you need.
This one is nice because it works whether your family is all adults or has a younger kid mixed in, and the robes are forgiving if you eat too much candy that night.
12. Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Baby Yoda
Space western vibes with a cozy twist since your kid basically just needs a green onesie and some pointy ear props. Dad throws on a vest and holster, mom does the classic side buns, and baby steals the whole show.
13. Fred, Wilma, and Pebbles Flintstone
An easy DIY route if you have some orange and white fabric lying around.
Faux animal print tunic for dad, white dress with a chunky necklace for mom, and a little leopard print onesie with a bone shaped hair tie for your kiddo.
14. The Cat in the Hat with Thing 1 and Thing 2
Big red and white striped hat for one parent, and matching blue wigs and red jumpsuits for the other parent and your kid.
This is such a fun, colorful option and pretty budget friendly since most pieces can be DIY’d.
15. Ketchup, Mustard, and Mayo
This is one of those costumes that always gets laughs at the neighborhood party. Red shirt and cap for ketchup, yellow for mustard, and white for mayo.
Super cheap, super easy, and honestly kind of hilarious once you’re all standing together.
16. The Beetlejuice Family
Black and white stripes go a long way here.
Add some wild hair and pale face makeup and you’ve got a costume that photographs really well, especially against a plain background for that classic striped effect.
17. Cruella, Roger, and a Dalmatian Puppy
Half black and half white wig for one parent, a simple suit for the other, and a spotted onesie for your little one.
This one is a favorite for families who want something a little glam but still easy to pull off.
18. Fred, Daphne, and Scooby-Doo
Ascot and sweater vest for dad, purple dress and orange scarf for mom, brown spotted onesie with a collar for your kid.
Mystery van optional, but it does make for a great photo backdrop if you have access to one.

Hats, vests, and bandanas round out the parents’ looks without much effort.

Inflatable or plush dinosaur costumes have gotten so soft and comfortable in the last few years that this is now one of the easiest store bought options out there.
Mix and match a T-Rex, triceratops, and a smaller baby dino.
21. The Pirate Crew
Striped shirts, bandanas, and a few gold hoop earrings turn any closet into a pirate costume in about ten minutes.
Add an eyepatch for your kid and maybe a stuffed parrot on the shoulder for extra flair.
22. The Circus Family
Top hat and red coat for the ringmaster, sparkly leotard for the lion tamer, and a soft lion costume with a yarn mane for your kid.

23. The Camping Family
This is such a cute, cozy idea if your family loves the outdoors.
One parent dresses as a tent (yes, really, and it’s easier than it sounds with felt and cardboard), the other as a campfire with red and orange fabric strips, and your kid gets to be a marshmallow on a stick.

Yellow face paint or yellow clothing ties this whole family together.
Bald cap and white shirt for dad, tall blue wig for mom, and a spiky orange wig with a red shirt for your kid.

A fun, old school option that not many families think of, which makes it stand out at any party.
Sailor outfit and fake forearm muscles for dad, black dress and red wig for mom, and a bonnet and diaper cover onesie for your little one.
26. The Astronaut Family
Puffy white suits, some NASA style patches, and a plastic helmet make this idea both easy to buy and genuinely comfortable to wear all evening.
Great pick if your kid is into space or if you just want something that isn’t too spooky.
27. The Traveler Family
This idea is a little different from the usual costume list, and it’s perfect if your family loves to travel.
Dress as a passport, a suitcase, and a globe, using cardboard and some paint for the bigger pieces.

Pick three different colors so everyone stands out from each other in photos.

Queen bee crown for mom, worker bee vest for dad, and a fuzzy little bee onesie for your kid.
30. The Skeleton Family
You really cannot go wrong with a classic black and white skeleton costume.
It works for every age, every body type, and honestly looks great in a group photo lined up in a row.
31. The Grinch, Cindy Lou Who, and Max the Dog
A great pick if your family is more of a December-loving crew but still wants to dress up for Halloween.
Green furry suit for one parent, a red robe and curly wig for the other, and a white dog costume with antlers for your kid.
That’s the full list. Honestly, picking just one is the hardest part once you start scrolling through these.
My own family usually ends up debating between two or three ideas right up until the week before Halloween,
so don’t stress if you can’t decide right away.
